With the start of 2nd semester coming soon, Math teachers are getting lots of questions about calculators.
For Math 10-3, Math 20-3, and Math 31 (Calculus), a scientific calculator is all that is needed. It is helpful for students if they have a dual display calculator. While there are a wide variety of options out there for scientific calculators, one that we have found many students like using is the Texas Instruments TI-30XIIS.
For all other courses, at the 10, 20, & 30-levels, a graphing calculator is needed. Again, there are a few options, but we recommend the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus – it is user friendly and the one most widely used by students and the one teachers are able to display on their computers during a lesson. While the colour edition is nice, it is not necessary. Remember that most stores will price match (even with Amazon), so shop around. If you are looking for a used calculator, there are a number of garage sale sites online. If you know a student who is graduating and no longer needs their calculator, they may also be great to reach out to.
If you have any questions about calculators, please reach out to any of the math teachers and they would be happy to answer your questions. And remember… label your calculator so it’s easy to identify if it gets lost.
